Weird unpredictable, unreliable routing July 28, 2010 KKN I have been using Magellan maestro 3100 for few years and am very happy with it, but recently battery started losing charge quickly. Instead of spending money on new battery & also on newer map updates, I thought it will be much better to buy a new unit.
Since I had such a good experience with Magellan & familiar with their interface, I decided to stick to Magellan. After some digging and searching decided to get Maestro 4700 based on my needs. Basically I need GPS when I am travelling on vacation or navigating to unknown local address. I don't need it for daily commuting or traveling, so was not really looking for an expensive unit with lots of bells & whistles. I needed a good decent unit with strong routing & easy interface. 4700 appeared to fit the bill.
This unit turned out to be a real disappointment, sure it has good size screen, has Bluetooth, has AAA Tourbook etc but it failed at the most important aspect : Routing.
As soon as I received it, I charged it for few hours, updated AAA tourbook, did software update & after call to Magellan Customer service, got June 2010 map update free as part of 30 day free map update. Was able to pair my phone, interface was great, really liked ability add custom one touch favorites etc. It has usual features like where am I, POI search, multi destination routing etc.
So far so good, but when I took it out for a test drive, that's where things started going awry. It was asking me to turn on a street when I was already on the same street for almost 2 miles. Sometimes it could not recognize where I was, showed I was driving through a "green" zone like when in a parking lot or a ground etc while I actually was on a major road. One time it asked me to turn after few feet on a road which was not even remotely close by. No matter which option I tried shorter, fastest etc, it kept coming with completely weird routes, non existing roads, incorrect turns, wrong location status etc.
Just to make sure, I took my old 3100 along for comparison after I started noticing issues with 4700's routing, for same route 3100 showed everything correct, while newer 4700 was showing completely different route which did not make any sense.I did make sure I have excellent satellite availability etc while I was trying the unit. I even drained battery completely to reset the unit, but still kept having routing issues. I really wanted this to work , But even after trying for about 10 days on many different (known) routes, 4700 remained completely off base in its routing. Last night while I pulled in on my driveway, it still showed that I am in some circle which is approximately half a mile away from my house, I gave up.
Since I won't be able to trust this GPS unit's routing when I am driving in a unknown area, it defeats the purpose of buying GPS receiver. May be I got a lemon but I now have no choice than to return it. I will stick to my older 3100 for now.
Magellan Maestro 4700 Works Well July 27, 2010 Peter H Dittmar (Linthicum, MD, US) Good solid product. It doesn't alway route the way I'd like to go, but it's better than most navigation devices that I've used.
I'd buy this again simply based on the excellent user interface. My previous GPS, an HP device, had an interface that was so awful as to be unusable. This one is simple to use and understand.
I recommend this as a solid, easy to use product.
I love reliability July 26, 2010 Luis Muniz (Lakeland, Fl US) My Magellan 4700 is super in all aspects that I have used so far. I haven't use the blue tooth yet but, the funtionality in all other features are what I expected and more. I set it and it smoothly guides me to my destination. I like it when I know ahead of time wether I'm turning right or left, or I have to make a legal U turn. The mount is very good also, it stays and never falls ( I had that problem with TomTom).
Magellan Maestro 4700 - terrific! July 26, 2010 Adrianne M. Dale This unit worked perfectly right out of the box. It's very intuitive to use with minimal need to consult the manual. A few things, however, could have been more accessible - battery status and signal strength as well as how to remove individual addresses when they were no longer useful. These were minor annoyances, given how accurate the directions have been in all my recent travels. I can't imagine going anywhere (new) without it. It's terrific!
Magellan Maestro 4700 July 26, 2010 elisa long stewart (LEXINGTON, NC, US) We love the Magellan Maestro 4700. Now my husband will never get us lost again. You can't get lost. If you make a wrong turn, the Magellan will re-direct you once you make an unadvised turn. The screen is big and the color is vibrant.
